Jerusalem Day, Remember the Har HaBayit

Jerusalem Day Song

My prayer is a song
A Psalm with an ever-changing Melody
Levels of meaning dance around familiar and foreign words
I stand in Song and Silence
Neither a more prominent communication with G-d
Drink the essence, the sweet savor in the unity that is Jerusalem

Here is how we want to see the Har Habayit, back in Jewish hands, with the Holy Temple built may it be done speedily in our days!  This is like the view if you were sitting on Mt. of Olives, with a super zoom camera.  We need the Cohenim, the Levi'im and all of Am Yisrael to really pray for this to happen!

The event to kick off the summer is here!

David Orbach and Avraham Lumbroso have teamed up with a wonderful Jazz and Blues Band, LOL Jazz and Blues Band.
They have been in rehearsal for a number of months and it is going to be a fantastic concert, taking place at the Mercaz HaTarbut Hillel 27 in the Center of Jerusalem.  June 12 doors open at 8:00pm

If there is time, then yours truly, Rachael Alice will play a set of Klezmer music, original music from the Kammen book, circa 1929, on clarinet!  David will accompany on guitar.

So be sure to mark the day, June 12, 8:00pm, 27 Hillel, Center of Jerusalem.

A great way to start the Jerusalem Summer!

How to advertise an event! On-line or off-line?

You have been working with you band for a long time.  You now feel that you are ready for the gig that you have been waiting for!  A big hall in the Center of Town! Wow, that is really an achievement!

But who is going to come?  Can you cow your family to come?  Well, only if they like the music.
So how are you going to find people who like your music?

One way is to put up lots of videos on Youtube to showcase your talents.  Good, you've done that?

You can put up on social media, flyers and make sure that all your Facebook friends know about the concert. In Israel, Yahoogroups still work a bit, Janglo is also a good place to put your ad.

But and this is what is going to be hard work.  You have to put flyers out on the street, in the apartment lobbies and in the print newspapers.  Yup, the old fashioned way of advertising is still a very important way to get your message across.

So put on those tennis shoes and hit it man.  Bring flyers wherever you go.  Hand them out to friends, ask them to put it up in their buildings.

In this day of digital information, you still need to plaster that smile on your face and show how nice you are, and that your musical performance will be just as wonderful as you say it will.

Good Luck,

Rachael Alice

The role of Business cards in your small business.

I have three different business cards.  Maybe I should have 4, but I think that three is enough.  I have one for each of my different businesses. I teach music in the afternoons,  I have tried to market and get students in the mornings, but most people prefer their music lessons later in the day.  http://rachaelorbach.weebly.com/

I also am an English teacher, mostly on-line nowadays, I work athttp://www.live-english.net/  When I started to work there the work was very part-time, so I had to have another way to earn money and support the family.

So I went  to . . . Beauty school, where I learned haircutting, facials, wig repair, eye-brow shaping, and now I work at this free-lance.  http://travelinghairsalon.weebly.com/

I find that I had to have business cards for each project.  It is not that people won't remember my name, but when I speak with people, I probe a little bit and I figure out what would interest them.  I can usually tell if the person would like English lessons, or music lessons, and then when I speak with women, I usually give them my Traveling Hair Salon card.  I put a few of each in a metal business card holder.  I also designed each card myself as well as each website.  I have found that if I use a graphic designer the card does not bring as many customers.  I feel the same way about websites.  Each one is different, because I have a different message to bring across.  Each business is unique and if I put all of them on  one card or on one website it would be too much.

If you find that you have a lot of left over, it means that you have to do more talking to people.  People don't like to be "sold" but be allowed to choose and "buy,"

I keep giving out the cards, and eventually one or another of my projects will be more dominant.  Maybe, or maybe not.  I just want to keep my calendar full.  If I have a full work-calendar then I will for sure be making money, and I am not picky about which of my "jobs" I do every day.  In fact each day is different and exciting.  I meet different people, some on Skype, some in person.

It is an interesting life. I hope that yours is too.

Get compensation from the airline if you were delayed or your flight was cancelled.

You may be able to get compensation if your flight to or from Israel was delayed or the flight was cancelled at the last minute, says Asher Rotbaum, an Israeli lawyer who specializes in this kind of work.  Recently he worked on a case where a flight from Asia was rerouted to Etria for 14 hours! The plane broke down and had to land there.   The passengers were offered a hotel, but it was 15 kilometers away, and if the replacement flight  would have come when the passengers were at the hotel, they would have missed the plane back to Tel Aviv.  As you can see it was a mess.

Asher Rotbaum has just finished an app that you can download here: http://www.appbrain.com/browse/dev/Asher+Rotbaum  So even if you are at the airport, you can sign in and start the legal process if your flight is delayed or cancelled, maybe you can get up to 3000NIS in compensation if your situation qualifies.

It is a good idea if there are lots of people on the plane to have everyone on the flight sign up because then you will have a stronger case and everyone can get the same compensation from the airline.

I wish you good luck, and I hope that you won't need this but you never know.

Wig Repair at the Traveling Hair Salon!

If your wig has gotten the "Bad Haircut" then you need to change it.  A woman brought me a wig that had the bangs cut wrong and instead of junking the wig, I took off the bangs and now it is a Headband wig!  This is the "before" picture:  with the bangs.  I took off the bangs, and then I sewed a wig ribbon on the wig, I was not able to use a machine to do this so it took a while, but it was worth it!

This is the finished product,

Isn't it beautiful?  I also washed and set the wig, changing the part so that all the hair now sits correctly for a band wig.  She was very happy and now can wear it with confidence!

Lag B'Omer in Jerusalem

When do we light the bonfires for the memory of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, the writer of the Zohar?

According to the Chief Rabbanate, since there is not a Torah law, nor even a Rabbanic law to light bonfires in his memory, if the 33rd day of the Omer falls on Shabbat, like it did this year, then the bonfires should be pushed off until the next day to avoid any and all violations of Shabbat.  The same applies to Rosh Hashana, Succot and the reading of the Megilla.  These are Torah and Rabbanic customs, and there is no blowing of the Shofar on Shabbat, no waving of the Four Species on Shabbat and no reading of the Megialla on Shabbat.  Also, the contemporary holidays of Israeli Memorial day of the Soldiers and Israeli Independence Day are pushed off a day for the Honor of Shabbat.

This same logic should apply to bonfires.  In the rest of the world, the memorial of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai is not marked with a bonfire, it is against the law to light fires anywhere you want.  If you want a bonfire, you must get a permit from the fire department, and even then you have to have it in a place where there is supervision, as well as have a large quantity of sand and water in order to put it out when you are finished. You are not allowed to let a fire burn itself out.  There can't be even an ember burning.

But last night there were some bonfires as you can see.  It would be much better that people would actually open the Zohar and study the real fire of the Torah instead of burning wood.

So, if you have to burn, then tonight, Sunday night is the time to do this.  and Happy Lag B'Omer.

Fibromyalgia, Time to Understand it, Manage it and then Get Rid of It

FIBROMYALGIA, TIME TO UNDERSTAND IT, MANAGE IT, LIVE WITH IT (AND NOT LET IT RUN YOUR LIFE).

Common signs and symptoms of fibromyalgia. (Se...

Understanding Fibromyalgia….

What Is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points. “Tender points” refers to tenderness that occurs in precise, localized areas, particularly in the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips. People with this syndrome may also experience sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and other symptoms.
How Many People Have Fibromyalgia?
According to the American College of Rheumatology, Fibromyalgia affects 3 to 6 million Americans. It primarily occurs in women of childbearing age, but children, the elderly, and men can also be affected.
What Causes Fibromyalgia?
Although the cause of Fibromyalgia is unknown, researchers have several theories about causes or triggers of the disorder. Some scientists believe that the syndrome may be caused by an injury or trauma. This injury may affect the central nervous system. Fibromyalgia may be associated with changes in muscle metabolism, such as decreased blood flow, causing fatigue and decreased strength. Others believe the syndrome may be triggered by an infectious agent such as a virus in susceptible people, but no such agent has been identified.
How Is Fibromyalgia Diagnosed?
Fibromyalgia is difficult to diagnose because many of the symptoms mimic those of other disorders. The physician reviews the patient’s medical history and makes a diagnosis of fibromyalgia based on a history of chronic widespread pain that persists for more than 3 months. The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) has developed criteria for Fibromyalgia that physicians can use in diagnosing the disorder. According to ACR criteria, a person is considered to have Fibromyalgia if he or she has widespread pain in combination with tenderness in at least 11 of 18 specific tender point sites.

Managing Fibromyalgia:

How Is Fibromyalgia Treated?
Treatment of Fibromyalgia requires a comprehensive approach. The physician, physical therapist, and patient may all play an active role in the management of fibromyalgia. Studies have shown that aerobic exercise, such as swimming and walking, improves muscle fitness and reduces muscle pain and tenderness.
Heat and massage may also give short-term relief. Antidepressant medications may help elevate mood, improve quality of sleep, and relax muscles. Patients with Fibromyalgia may benefit from a combination of exercise, medication, physical therapy, and relaxation.
FIBROMYALGIA Key Words
Analgesic: A medication or treatment that relieves pain.
Arthritis: Literally means joint inflammation, but is often used to indicate a group of more than 100 rheumatic diseases. These diseases affect not only the joints but also other connective tissues of the body, including important supporting structures such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments, as well as the protective covering of internal organs.
Autoimmune disease: One in which the immune system destroys or attacks the patient’s own body tissue.
Cartilage: A tough, resilient tissue that covers and cushions the ends of the bones and absorbs shock.
Chronic disease: An illness that lasts for a long time.
Collagen: The main structural protein of skin, tendon, bone cartilage, and connective tissues.
Connective tissue: The supporting framework of the body and its internal organs.
Fibromyalgia: Sometimes called fibrositis, a chronic disorder that causes pain and stiffness throughout the tissues that support and move the bones and joints. Pain and localized tender points occur in the muscles, particularly those that support the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips. The disorder includes widespread pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances.
Fibrous capsule: A tough wrapping of tendons and ligaments that surrounds the joint.
Flare: A period in which disease symptoms reappear or become worse.Genetic marker: A specific tissue type or gene, similar to a blood type, that is passed on from parents to their children. Some genetic markers are linked to certain rheumatic diseases.
Immune response:The reaction of the immune system against foreign substances. When this reaction occurs against substances or tissues within the body, it is called an autoimmune reaction.
Immune system: A complex system that normally protects the body from infections. It combines groups of cells, the chemicals that control them, and the chemicals they release.
Inflammation: A characteristic reaction of tissues to injury or disease. It is marked by four signs: swelling, redness, heat, and pain.
Joint: A junction where two bones meet. Most joints are composed of cartilage, joint space, fibrous capsule, synovium, and ligaments.
Joint space: The volume enclosed within the fibrous capsule and synovium.
Ligaments: Bands of cordlike tissue that connect bone to bone. Muscle: A structure composed of bundles of specialized cells that, when stimulated by nerve impulses, contract and produce movement.
Myopathies: Inflammatory and noninflammatory diseases of muscle.
Myositis: Inflammation of a muscle.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs):A group of drugs, such as aspirin and aspirin-like drugs, used to reduce inflammation that causes joint pain, stiffness, and swelling.
Raynaud’s phenomenon: A circulatory condition associated with spasms in the blood vessels of the fingers and toes causing them to change color. After exposure to cold, these areas turn white, then blue, and finally red.
Remission: A period during which symptoms of disease are reduced (partial remission) or disappear (complete remission).
Sicca syndrome: A condition manifested by dry eyes and dry mouth.
Sleep disorder: One in which a person has difficulty achieving restful, restorative sleep. In addition to other symptoms, patients with fibromyalgia usually have a sleep disorder.
Synovium: A tissue that surrounds and protects the joints. It produces synovial fluid that nourishes and lubricates the joints.
Tender points: Specific locations on the body that are painful, especially when pressed.
Tendons: Fibrous cords that connect muscle to bone.
Vasculitis: Inflammation in the blood vessels. It may occur throughout the body.

Living with Fibromyalgia:

Problem-Causing Foods
According to the National Fibromyalgia Association, some people with fibromyalgia feel better if they eliminate chocolate, sodas, coffee and alcohol from their diet. This may be because of their effect on blood sugar levels. In addition, some of the foods that may trigger pain, according to the National Fibromyalgia Association, are sugar, white flour, fried foods and dairy products. These foods and beverages do not need to be completely eliminated by people with fibromyalgia, but they should be limited when possible.

Fruits and Vegetables

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is a healthy diet for anyone, but is especially important for people with fibromyalgia. The National Fibromyalgia Association states that phytonutrients found in fruits and vegetables help to heal the body of inflammation, decrease pain and prevent other diseases. For example, they state that flavonoids in foods like apples and grapes reduce joint swelling while protecting against heart disease. Also, carotenoids, which are in leafy green vegetables and citrus fruits, may help to reduce some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia while protecting against lung cancer and skin cancer.

Raw Foods

Raw foods provide exceptionally good nutrition and may boost a person’s immune system, according to the National Fibromyalgia Association. The association explains that eating raw foods like fruits, uncooked vegetables and nuts can help to maintain steady white blood cell counts so that the body is strong to fight off the effects of fibromyalgia.

The Best Diet for Fibromyalgia

The National Fibromyalgia Association recommends that people with fibromyalgia drink at least eight glasses of water each day and eat a well-balanced diet. While fruits and vegetables are healthy, especially when eaten raw, people with fibromyalgia also need protein from foods like meats and beans, healthy fats from foods like avocados and olive oil and fiber-rich whole grains.

Stress and its links to Fibromyalgia Symptoms

stress is your enemy

Stress is known as the silent killer. Stress has been attributed to heart problems, blood pressure problems and several other health problems and stress is also linked as a trigger for fibromyalgia. A stressful event in a person life may trigger the onset of fibromyalgia. Symptoms of fibromyalgia often occurs after an experience of mental shock or serious illness. It is believed that stress unmasks the fibromyalgia disorder in people who have a genetic disposition to it.Fibromyalgia is thought to be a central nervous system disorder in which either pain-sensing nerves are excessively sensitive, or the brain is extremely sensitive to pain impulses. People with fibromyalgia experience more pain when they are stressed. You need to control your stress levels as more stress will most definitely increase your fibromyalgia symptoms.By simply having fibromyalgia is stressful. FMS sufferers have to constantly deal with pain, mental cloudiness and overall fatigue and this by itself is stressful for anyone. Having problems accomplishing simple tasks around the house or at work can be stressful enough if you don’t even consider the financial implications that can arise if you are hindered from working your job properly. Not being able to accomplish things is stressful, especially if it affects your employment situation.Stress reduction is an important part of managing your fibromyalgia. Here are a few ways that may help alleviate some of your stress.1. Good self care. Eating right – a nutritious diet, regular exercise and ample rest are very important.2. Practice body awareness. Being aware about how your body feels and how it reacts to certain situations and tensions can help you better manage your fibromyalgia symptoms. Using relaxation and other techniques when the pain starts to begin can help you reduce the onset of fibromyalgia pain.3. Change the way you think. This takes practice, but it gives you a chance to respond to situations instead of reacting.
4. Keep a stress journal. Stress journals are a great way to keep track of your fibromyalgia triggers and what you did to reduce the pain. Being aware of your triggers will help you avoid the stressful situations that causes them.
5. Learn stress management techniques, such as visualization, meditation and breathing. These techniques will help you physically and mentally relax and decrease both pain and stress.
If you decrease your stress, you will probably experience less pain and fatigue from your fibromyalgia.

Slideshow: Easy Home Exercises to Manage Fibromyalgia Pain

Should You Exercise?

People with fibromyalgia get the same health benefits from exercise as other people — and more. Regular exercise combats fatigue and increases your energy. It makes your joints more flexible and improves sleep and mood. Exercise frees people with fibromyalgia to live a fuller life. Talk to your doctor before you begin exercising. Some exercises may not be recommended for patients and could be harmful.

This is what Jaffa gate used to look like over 2000 years ago.  And when you look up you could have seen the Temple!  We spent Israel's Independence Day there, imagining what it would have been like to have lived in the peaceful time before the Romans came.  . . .

Braid Bun, Fast, Easy and Elegant Hairstyle

Today I got my daughter ready for school and gave her a quick, easy and elegant hairstyle.

You can do this on any girl whose braid is at least 10 inches or 30cm

How to do this

1. The hair should be damp, but not soaking wet.
2. Gather all the hair into a ponytail, making sure that there are no bumpa "balutot" in Hebrew.
3. I used a four strand braid, but you can also make a regular 3 strand braid, secure the end with a elastic.
4. Bring the braid around as you would a bun, putting many bobby pins to hold in place.
5. To keep the flyaways, spray lightly with hairspray.

Done.

Thanks to our wonderful Model!

Israel's new High Holidays? Army Duty for All?

हिन्दी गौरव इसराइल  Hindi Gaurav -Israel

Charedi are afraid of women soldiers like these praying  at the Kotel?
By Rachael Alice Orbach
Many Israelis are excited about today, Israel's Memorial Day, for fallen soldiers, and terror victims.  There are many people who take off from work, and go to the cemeteries.  Tonight will segue into Israel's Independence Day, with fireworks and music celebrations.  On Independence Day itself, a bank holiday, people will go to BBQ's, swim, go to museums and generally have fun.

The secular community looks forward to these two days, the Dati-Leumi also celebrates Independence Day as the "beginning of the coming of the Mashiach" by saying Hallel, special Psalms that signify a holiday, during both the evening  and morning prayers.

The latter view is scorned by the Charedi community that doesn't see the miracles in the establishment of the Jewish State of Israel.  They stay home, and the boys go to "heder" as usual.   Their view is that you don't interrupt Torah Study except for the holidays that were decreed by the Sages of the Talmud.   Women have definite roles to play and being in the Army is not one of them for either men or women.

This view extends into the debate about Army duty.  The traditional view is that Yeshiva students, men who learn full time in a Yeshiva shouldn't have to go into the Army. for any amount of time.

In  secular Israeli society, Army duty in of itself is a sacred duty.  Each 18 year old is summoned to the Army to be medically and psychologically checked to see if he is suited to do Army duty. 18 year old women can go into the Army, or they can do National Service.

The best of the best get to be in combat units, and those with a lower profile do other non-combat tasks.  Both men and women are welcomed into the Army, but they serve in different units.

The Chariedi don't want to send their sons at all, and their daughters usually don't do National Service either.  The girls get married at a young age and start their new families at once.

But it doesn't have to be this way.  Army duty can be a place where the different sectors of Israeli society can learn tolerance of each other.   The Dati-Leumi have a system that they combine Army Duty with Yeshiva study.  I have long maintained that the Charedi could do this as well. And it has happened:  a chareidi hesder yeshiva, called Derech Chaim, has approval from the Army and is in operations with a small class of 16 students. For an  in-depth interview go here:an-interview-with-rabbi-karmi-gross

What tasks could the Charedi soldiers do?  They could lead the prayer services every morning and on Shabbat, they could be in charge of all the food that is served by being the cooks and be the kashruth supervisors.  They could serve in other support functions. They would be in their own units without women soldiers, in any function around them.

All sectors of the population of the State of Israel should contribute to the state.  If the Arab citizens do not want to serve in the Army, they could do National Service in the communities, help in hospitals, schools and provide a positive role model of a citizen.

In this 'holiday' season, we need to re-think the issues of Army duty and the obligation of citizens to serve the country.

Coloring your hair during the Omer

I read that Rabbi Shlomo Aviner in the "Olam Katan" weekly Dvar Torah came out and said that a woman can color the hair during the Counting of the Omer.

This is great news as usually coloring the hair only lasts about a month, and then the white roots start to be more and more noticeable.   So a woman, can color the hair.

I am working on finding a system that I can do hair color and have more comfortable for women in wheelchairs, or even a woman sitting in a chair.   This is one of the products that I am considering, http://www.ebay.com/itm/EZ-SHAMPOO-Hair-Washing-Tray-Portable-Cleaner-Tub-Sink-Home-Medical-Patient-/200831997363?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ec28515b3

Questions: Have you ever used this product? What are the advantages? What are the disadvantages?
Do you recommend it?  Why or why not?

I thank you very much if you can help me make a decision about this.
