The Great Synagogue of the Old City of Jerusalem during the day and at night!

I was in the Old City this week, and I couldn't resist these pictures.  You never know when you are going to be that way again, so it is best to catch your memories when you see them!
This was one of the synagogues which was destroyed in 1948 when Israel had to surrender the Old City of Jerusalem to Jordan.

Now, has been rebuilt and it is beautiful!
You can go inside as a tour, or even pray there!

Jerusalem Municipality destroys apartment in Har Nof

On the day that Chava * was arranging everything last minute for her long awaited trip to the United States, she was going to give the key to the renter - housesitter, do last minute packing, make sure that everything was just right, she got a knock at the door.

Who could it be?  The woman who was going to rent the apartment wasn't due until 10:15 and now it is 9:45!  She opened the door and found workmen there.  "I didn't request any workmen right now!" she thought to herself.

There was also the police with an order to destroy the illegal building,.  What????  You don't mean MY apartment?  Yes, the paper say that it is this apartment?  What are we going to do? What can we do with all our stuff???

And the renter, she is going to be here soon as well! What is going on?  My world is being turned upside down!  The workers gave them a bit of time to salvage anything that they needed, and then they proceeded to destroy the apartment.

The upshot was that the apartment owner built the apartment in the large 60 meter + lobby of the building and he got a notice two weeks ago to tear down the apartment, but he did nothing.  He didn't even tell  his tenants!

Contrary to popular opinion, Israel does take illegal building very seriously whether it is on the Jewish side of town or the Arab side of town.  It is the law in Israel that if you have built illegally, then you have two weeks to tear down, and then afterwards, you can apply for a building permit to rebuild.  If your permit is approved then fine, but if not, and you build, it will be torn down again.

This story does not have a happy ending for the owner.  His investment is now lost.  The tenants have all their stuff in a storage room,  The temporary renter has to scramble to find a place to stay.  There are no winners.

I was able to help the long term renters, as I posted on Yahoogroups and Facebook about an apartment for them.  They already got a response. We are still looking for a temporary place for the tourist.

What is the moral of this story?  When you are renting an apartment, demand to see the Arnona bill.  If the owner will not let you see it, then most probably the property is illegal and you could be thrown out at any moment.

I'm here to help if you need it.

Please share this blog post to as many people as you can!  This proves that the Israeli government is non-partisan when it comes to illegal building.  They don't care what your religion is if you break the law!!

Tonight is the start of Tisha B'Av

My calendar on the wall states that there has been 1945 years since the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash.  Not only is this number very significant, but it brings to mind the attempted destruction of the Jewish people by Nazi Germany.  Look what has happened in those 1945 years!  The Jewish people have been through so much!  We have been dispersed throughout the world, being called the cause of all the world's problems, and not given a place to call home.

This feeling is what we feel when the fast of Tisha B'Av starts.  This year the fast starts at 7:07 pm.  We sit on low chairs, go to listen to the Megillat Eicha, sleep on the floor.  In the morning we go listen to  Eicha again.  The mood is somber and sad.

Later in the afternoon, the mood lightens a little. Tefillin which were not put on in the morning are put on for Mincha.  The songs of the Mincha Service become a bit more upbeat.

Then, for the Ma'ariv service, we are happy again! The tradition tells that the Mashiach will be born on Tisha B'Av!  Many people, since Torah study, except for the Book of Yirmeyaho, is not studied, spend their time to clean the house, to be ready for the Messanic Age.  I don't know if I will have enough energy to do that, but I will be observing Tisha B'Av along with all of Klal Yisrael.

May next year, the 1946th year since the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash in fact usher in the Maschach Tzkanu, and may Am Yisrael know no more sorrow.

Watches are a thing of the Past?

In Business you have to be on time.  If you are late for an appointment then it is very embarrassing and you may lose out.  So, how do most people know the time?  Nowadays they have been using their smartphones.  There are advantages and disadvantages to this.

Advantages:  You have not only the time and date, but also all your other data on the phone.

Disadvantages: You have to take the phone out and turn it on, or touch the screen or move to a different screen in order to get the time.

So, it is much faster to just have a watch on your arm.  But this doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg! Who needs a watch?  Well, teachers for one thing.  As a teacher, I cannot be always looking at the phone, and touching the screen while I am teaching in front of a classroom full of students.

Many people have turned to watches as a fashion statement. A friend of mine who dives maybe once a year has invested in 5 diving watches.  Does he use them when he dives?  Of course, but the diving watch is a statement of who he is and it supports his self image. So he forks out at least $500 per watch.

Many investors are seeing the light of owning watches.  These are what the Investors are saying about watch companies.

Dvar Torah Parshat Bereshit

I know that this is not the right time of year, we just read the longest Sedra in the Torah, Naso, but we were studying Rav Dessler today, the end of book 2.  The main theme that has occupied mankind, and not only the Jews is the "fall of Adam." This is a Christian concept in my humble opinion.  People have been upset that Adam Harishon was given a Mitzvah, and he didn't follow it.  He went and ate from the Forbidden Fruit.  It's human nature isn't it?  If you work with kids or are a parent, you know that if you say to someone, don't touch that!  They certainly will touch it.  Have you ever read the "Curious George" books.  They are filled with examples of the curious monkey who gets in to lots of trouble each and every time.  Its human nature.  Why?

That is a great question.  Why are people like that?  They don't really understand that G-d is running the world.  Hashem pulls the strings and we as Jews are expected to rise above the human temptations.  We are given the Mitzvot.  The Mitzvot are given to us to use to elevate ourselves.  Just now an old man came to the door asking for Tzdaka.  I have a pouch that I fill with coins every day and when I give, I don't even look at how much I'm giving.  I just grab a few and give them.  I don't even look at the person, nor do I want to hear their story. I just give.  This is a hard Mitzvah for me. I work very hard and long hours.  Sometimes I'm busy from 8:30am until 7:00pm.  (like tomorrow, just send me SMS if you want to get a hold of me).  So for me to give money is difficult.
This is a Mitzvah, and G-d has give me the money to put to good use.  I support my family and I give.

But back to our question.  Why did Adam and Chava disobey Hashem?  Didn't they hear G-d himself give the command?  I think that the answer has to do with the lack of parenting.  Adam and Chava didn't have childhoods.  They were born and grew up the same day, went into Gan Eden and were given the Mitzah.  They didn't have parents to teach them values, and how to deal with disappointment and waiting for a reward.  They felt that everything falls like rain from Heaven.
Why did they act as they did?  Human nature. The Mitzvot help us to learn how to delay gratification and how to deal with the wants and needs of other people.

May the light of Hashem shine on you and help you to fulfill your mission in life.

The New Trend in Banking!

There has been a big change in the banking industry in the past few years. In the past, the banks charged you for having an account, for putting money in the account, for taking money out of the account, for having a credit card and so on and so on.  There was only one bank that didn't charge, but you had to be a "Oved Medina", that is a government worker and then you could open up an account at Bank Yahav, and not pay for checking, and depositing.

But all that has changed! Bank Yerushalim (Bank Jerusalem) now has opened up a new way of doing banking!  I saw a sign while I was on the way to work, that showed a table with all the bank charges of all the banks!  Bank Yerushalim has no charges for any of these things.  They also have a Heter Iska and thus they can pay you a percentage for even having money in your account!  :)

They have a new way of doing business, that is video conferencing with a banker, and this saves them  manpower and space.  You don't have to wait in line to open your account or to find out more information about your account.  The website to check your account is also very easy to get to and easy to move around.

So, all my family, except for my husband who is a Government worker, is moving to Bank Yerushalim   https://www.bankjerusalem.co.il/pages/Default.aspx

It is time to finally feel good about depositing money in the bank!
