Tonight is the start of Tisha B'Av

My calendar on the wall states that there has been 1945 years since the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash.  Not only is this number very significant, but it brings to mind the attempted destruction of the Jewish people by Nazi Germany.  Look what has happened in those 1945 years!  The Jewish people have been through so much!  We have been dispersed throughout the world, being called the cause of all the world's problems, and not given a place to call home.

This feeling is what we feel when the fast of Tisha B'Av starts.  This year the fast starts at 7:07 pm.  We sit on low chairs, go to listen to the Megillat Eicha, sleep on the floor.  In the morning we go listen to  Eicha again.  The mood is somber and sad.

Later in the afternoon, the mood lightens a little. Tefillin which were not put on in the morning are put on for Mincha.  The songs of the Mincha Service become a bit more upbeat.

Then, for the Ma'ariv service, we are happy again! The tradition tells that the Mashiach will be born on Tisha B'Av!  Many people, since Torah study, except for the Book of Yirmeyaho, is not studied, spend their time to clean the house, to be ready for the Messanic Age.  I don't know if I will have enough energy to do that, but I will be observing Tisha B'Av along with all of Klal Yisrael.

May next year, the 1946th year since the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash in fact usher in the Maschach Tzkanu, and may Am Yisrael know no more sorrow.
