Why you should learn how to touch type!

I remember many years ago, when I was in High School, University Sr. High in Los Angeles, I had to take a summer school course.  I was in a quandary about what I wanted to do for a living.  I had thought about being a doctor, but my grades were always a solid "B," and in those days, maybe even now you needed to be a straight A student to even think about medical school.

I liked music, but who could really make a living as a musician?  I do teach music, and it is very fun, but that is not what the guidance counselor would call a high calling.

Like most kids with a big family, before the Internet, I asked my Great Uncle Henry Pittler what to do.  He was very experienced and knew a lot.  He told me to take typing.  Before the Internet, typing was considered a skill for blue collar workers.  If you were a good typist, you could be a secretary.  I defiantly didn't want to do that!  I was against the idea!

But it was either typing or remedial math.  So I took the typing class.  It was given by Mr. Triggs the History teacher.  It was not the most exciting six weeks.  We had the newest typwriters, IBM Selectrics that you could backspace to erase with a white out ribbon. You didn't have to paint on the white out and wait for it to dry! It was a miracle!   But if there were too many mistakes, then Mr. Triggs had us do the whole page over again.  That was before computers were commonplace.

Actually I did have a part-time job over the following summers as a secretary, but the skill  mostly now I use is the typing, every day.  I am an English teacher, and I write new lesson plans, I don't have to think about where the keys are, my fingers just "know" where to go and what to do to get out what is most important, my ideas.

So now, you don't have to suffer a manual typewriter where all the keys get balled up together when you type too fast, you don't have to worry about White Out not completely drying and then if you type on wet White out, the key types white, and then you have to back up and do it over again.  We have fast keyboards attached to our computers, that the keyboard itself doesn't cause problems.

Learning how to type opens up a whole new world of not having to focus on where the letters are.  I couldn't really find a good book or program that really practiced all the letter positions, so I am writing a book.

If you take my typing class, you get a copy of the book free.  The cost of twice a week class for 4 weeks is 800NIS. If you sign up for the whole course at one time, then you get a 10% discount.

Zot Chanuka

Zot Chanuka is the last day of Chaunuka.

Why is it named Zot? (This)  This is because it was the last day of the miracle of the oil.  The one flask of oil that was found by with the stamp of the High Priest was only enough to burn for one day.  It kept burning and burning, and burning!  The news of this miracle of oil that didn't go out must have spread like wildfire, even in those days with out any form of modern communication!

But as you know, you don't just let a miracle happen, you also do what you can! So the oil factory that was under the supervision of the Temple must have been working around the clock to produce olive oil.  This eighth day must have seemed like a real miracle for the oil to keep burning.

The miracle was really apparent on this last day,  that is why this last day of Chanuka is "Zot Chanuka" This is Chanuka, for it was the last time that Hashem in those day revealed himself.

May Hashem continue the daily miracles that we see around us, and help us to appreciate the small miracles that occur in our daily lives.

The School Massacre in Conneticut

I am sure that you have all heard about the massacre that happened on Friday in Connecticut.  A man went to a school and gunned down 20 people, including schoolchildren learning in a classroom.

Well, this would not happen in Israel.  First of all, every school has a school guard who checks for identification, and if the person has a gun.  They are stationed at the school gate during school hours.  They are trained and licensed in the use of the gun and in the circumstances of when to use the gun or not.  If the guard even takes out the gun inappropriately, he loses the license on the spot.  (This happened to one of my neighbors).

Every 18 year old who goes into the army is drilled in the proper use of a gun.  They carry their guns with them when they are in active service, and there has only been one instance of someone going mad with a gun and causing a problem.  (It has only happened once in my memory, and it made front page news all around the world! - try to guess the person's name and where it happened in Israel, not a very hard trivia question).

There is not the culture of "gun lovers" here in Israel.  There is no hunting,. all the animals are protected and people do not kill animals for fun as many people do in the United States.

No one can go on a "rampage" at a mall either.  There is a security guard at every entrance to a mall, movie theater, concert and supermarket.  There is no way that a mad man can enter a mall and kill with a gun or a knife.

This adds up to the cost of goods, services and events, but we are happy to pay the extra manpower cost because it saves lives.

Maybe the United States needs to take Israel's example.  Security saves lives.  Just do it for your sake and your children's sake.

History of Social Workers Help or Hinder?

This is first in a series of posts that examine the work of social workers in a critical analysis.

History of Social Work

In the past, the concept of helping the poor was very important.  People donated money and goods directly to the poor to help them.  The  early Church in post Roman times took care of the poor people and helped them.

In the 19th century, with the Industrial Revolution, many farmers gave up their work on the farms and went to the cities to work.  Industrial companies did not have safety regulations, and many people were hurt on the job and did not receive compensation when they were unable to work. These people were just "thrown away."  Social work began to deal with these problems, and categorized people into different categories  working poor, idle poor to name a few.

At that time  started the debate that still rages today, is social work a real profession?  Do they really help people?

Does it help to be put in a hole called idle poor?  What problems does a social worker solve if any?

Even in the Early 20th Century  Dr Abraham Flexner  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Flexner said that social work is not a profession because it lacks the scientific method.  How can one person decide what help a person can receive? Who gives the money?  How is it allocated?  How can a social worker measure if the person is in a better state than before?

The first social workers were nurses who worked in hospitals.  They helped the patients in the tuberculosis wards, deal with the disease, and helped them deal with their disease.
There was a school of medical social work, for nurses working in hospitals.

In my opinion, a hospital is the place where a social worker is appropriate, and good.  In my next article we will examine more aspects and see if social work is appropriate to other settings.

Before going to a social worker, look at your life and see if you really need such a pushy, interfering entity in your life.  It is much better to hire a life coach who is only interested in your success and how to help you get to your goals.

Consumer Protection Bakeries and Dairies

Consumer Protection is very important.  If consumers accept substandard products, then the companies will run roughshod.

There were the supermarket price wars, and now we are looking out for bad products.

Two weeks, I bought a 2 liter bottle of Shoko milk, (the only kind of milk that my children will drink. The milk was sour, and undrinkable. The milk was still within the last marketable date.  My son called the company to complain, and today we got a coupon for a bottle of milk.

I buy every day at least one loaf or two of the common "brown bread,."  This picture is what I found!
Disgusting!

Stand up for your rights!  There is a website that you can complain to Berman's Bakery and you can complain on the phone as well.

Supermarket price wars

There is a lot of talk nowadays about lowering the prices in the supermarkets.  In Talpiot, Jerusalem, the markets via with each other to get the most customers by offering some products at belo  w cost, hoping that people will come into the store and then buy higher profit margin products.    The lines are long, the customers get antzy and everyone is happy when the ordeal is over and you have paid for your food and get home.
The store cuts down on other things that add to the shopping experience,  The plastic bags are so thin, that if you put a bottle of wine inside, you are lucky to bring it to the car, it has happened to me that the bag breaks as you lift the bottle out of the cart!

But what do people really want?  When I go to the supermarket, I want fair prices, but most of all I want a clean store, enough products on the shelves, the price on the shelf matches the price on the product, matches what is in the computer,  bags that don't break, and at least a checker who smiles at me.  They don't have to actually say thank you, but it helps.

How does your supermarket check out?

Golan Telecom Hype or not?

I have been following the saga of the Cellphone.  I have been in two of the main companies, Cellcom and Orange.  They are good companies, and they make a lot of money. They also spend a lot of money.  They sell you a phone, and service it.  The downside is that you often have to wait a long time sitting in the offices to get service.    The Big Three, Pelephone, Cellcom and Orange are in for a big surprise right now.

There is a new kid on the block, and it is not Mirs, who sells phones to companies so that they can keep track of where their employees are by GPS.  (Could be an invasion of privacy)

No, Golan Telecom is here to stay, they are lean and they are taking advantage of the fact that almost everyone can use the website to order and look up their bills.  They have streamlined the process, and the website is in all the languages that you want,  Hebrew, English, French, Russian, and even Arabic.

They have two plans, one that is good for Smartphones and one for other phones.  If you have a Smart phone, your bill for one phone is usually around 300NIS right?  You are paying for the phone, maybe 85NIS a month, and then for your service.  If you have two phones, like I have then your bill is around 600NIS.  I tried to call Orange and get the bill lowered, but they said that I had the cheapest possible.

Well, not really.

I went to Golan, on the Internet and lo and behold:  49NIS a month for the first six months, and 99NIS after that!  OK, I'll continue paying for my high priced phone, but this is more like it!  For the kids, they have even a sweeter deal.  But you have to make sure that they only speak 60 minutes a month.  (hard to figure, right?)
So, this is only 9.99 NIS a month.  This could be good for senior citizens too.

I'm sold.  I left Orange this week.  Life is too short to be paying so much for the cellphone.

Chanuka is coming!

The stores are already stocking Jelly Donuts!  See here, don't they look Yummy?  Bring a few home every day and enjoy the Holiday.

The reason that we eat donuts is because we want to remember the miracle of the oil.  What does this mean?
After the war between the Jews and the Syrian Greeks, the Cohanim entered the Temple, and while they were cleaning up they found only one flask of Olive Oil with the stamp of the  High Priest, that was certified to be pure olive oil, the only kind that was permitted to be used in the 7 branched Menora that had to be kept burning 24 hours a day.  Usually one flask would be for one day.  So, they lit the Menora with the one flask of oil, because they wanted to observe the mitzvah for one day at least.  They sent out for more oil, but it would take 8 days to pick the olives, and process them for use in the Menora.  It had to be of a special type of oil, so that is why it took so long to make.

Hashem, in order that the lights of the Menora would shine and give hope to the Jewish people did the miracle and the oil in the Menora lasted the whole eight day period that it took to make new olive oil.

This is why we have an eight day holiday of Chanuka.  The word חנוכה  means rededication, the Temple was rededicated, during this time, and we also should use this time of year to rededicate ourselves to learn more Torah, do more Mitzvot, and bring Am Yisrael to the perfection that we all strive for.  Erase war, and heartache, and bring perfect health and happiness during this Festival of Lights.
