Glass Bottle Carrier - Life on a Shoestring

Health Authorities now are telling us to stop re-using plastic bottles to carry water.  So, we often see in the stores, these metal bottles.  One could also carry a Thermos, but they are too big and bulky for me!

Instead, I decided to make a bottle carrier which can carry a glass bottle safely. I tell you how to do this in this video:

If you have a neat idea and want me to review and demonstrate it, then you can send it to me:

Thinking of Gastric Bypass surgery? Think again!

Many people are desperate to lose weight and we all want to do it in the easiest way possible.  It seems that it is an epidemic right now, that we are all too heavy.

One way is to do Gastric Bypass surgery.  The logic behind this is that if the stomach is smaller, then when you eat, you will feel full faster and won't eat so much.

This can help a lot of people, but what the general public doesn't know is that once you have the surgery, you can't just go and eat the same things that you ate before.  You have to be very careful not to eat too much at one time.

I know of a woman who had this surgery a few years ago, and now she is having lots of problems with her stomach and had to go on a liquid diet. She hasn't eaten a regular meal in months!

Another problem, is that people get used to the smaller stomach and don't lose the weight.
They don't stay on the special diet.

So if you are considering Gastric Bypass Surgery, first try to go on the diet, and see if you can stick to it.  Here is a link that gives all the details about it: http://www.obesitycoverage.com/the-big-gastric-bypass-diet-guide/

If you can stay on the special diet, say the maintenance  (the last stage) for a long time, you probably don't need the surgery!

If you need help, then contact me though the website below.

Good luck!

Grow your own! . . . Garlic! - Life on a Shoestring

Everything is getting more and more expensive.  This is a fact of life, and has been for the past couple of hundred years.  But there are some ways that we can beat the high costs of living.  One way is to grow your own food.  I have a porch that gets some sun, and I have a potted olive tree that I have had for over 10 years.  This year it is giving olives!
But is post is about Garlic!  It is easy to grow your own and you don't have to wait 10 years!  Not that I was counting anyway!

How do you grow your own garlic?  First you take a piece of garlic that you bought at the market. My package like almost everything else nowadays. is from . . . wait for it ,  is from China!

Now, take one piece, if it is growing already it is ok, put the green part upwards in the pot.  If the piece of garlic has not grown, like mine here, then put the cut off  (flat end) end down in the pot first.
This is a piece of garlic after about a month.  Your Garlic needs a bit of water every two days, the pot has to get the water out the bottom.  Clip off the flowers if you don't want it to produce seeds.

Wait about 10 months until the green at the top dies, then take out the garlic, dry it for about a week, where it gets a bit of breeze.

If you want more information go here; http://www.wikihow.com/Grow-Garlic-Indoors-in-a-Pot

Have fun growing your own!!!

How to Make a Kosher for Passover Blueberry Pie - Life on a Shoestring

Passover Blueberry Pie!
I like to eat on Passover, but not only Matza and chocolate spread.  This is a recipe that doesn't need baking either for the pie crust or the filling.

Passover Blueberry Pie:

Use this pie crust: Pesach Pie Crust http://www.food.com/recipe/pesach-pie-crust-59199?soc=socialsharingtw via @fooddotcom

Then for the filling I used this recipe:  http://bangordailynews.com/2008/08/22/living/there-are-many-ways-to-make-a-blueberry-pie/  But with one important difference, I used Matza Flour instead of the cornstarch.  You might have to cook it longer to make the sauce thicker, but it is worth the amount of time.

Happy Passover!

Traditional Chinese Medicine - Life on a Shoestring

Until now, If you wanted to go to a Traditional Chinese Medicine, it cost a lot of money.  You then had to keep going back for treatments.  But I found a site that you can try out for yourself!

I just found it last night, so it is an experiment for me, too.  I have been using Reiki for a long time, and it helps when I am very tired, not having slept the night before for any number of reasons.  But it doesn't really solve the problems, just tones them down a bit.  That's good, and I do Reiki when I am in the elevator, (we live on the 7th floor) so the minute or so is just the ticket to close the eyes and take a Reiki Break!

I teach on-line to Chinese students on https://www.italki.com/teacher/1581946 and as I am teaching the kids, I am also learning from them.  So, I found this site last night.

One caveat, Don't do the Meridian Massage right before going to sleep!  It Revs you up and it makes it difficult to sleep!

This is the Main Page  http://www.shen-nong.com/eng/front/index.html,  I am working on Vision and Hearing.  You can work on what you need.

I wish you lots of Luck!

Exercise on a Shoestring - Life on a Shoestring

We all want to be in shape!  Especially with Purim and Pesach around the corner it is important to get in the habit now of not overeating, eating the right foods, and doing exercise.

This is very important for those who will be soon cleaning the house from top to bottom!

I have been looking for different workouts that don't take a lot of time.

So to help I bought a running trampoline :  This picture is not of me, (just for clarification)
So what kinds of exercise can you do with this type of trampoline?  I'm glad that you asked!

The blog tells us how she runs and jumps on the trampoline, and it does feel good, Really!

But I was looking for something with a bit more Umph, so I found this: \

I will be working this into my daily schedule, and the best thing is that one of these running trampolines are not that expensive, are movable, (well it does weigh a bit) and I could run at any time and not bother the neighbors, it doesn't use electricity!

So, Get ready and start your short exercise routine, 15 minutes a day is all that it will take,

OK?  ok.

Make a pet bed out of an old Sweater! Life on a Shoestring

This is a project that I have been wanting to do for some time, but I never knew how.  I have a lot of old sweaters from the kids, and how I hate to throw things away that might still have a use!  Yes, I'm a pack rat, and now I am going to make this pet bed for my cat.
She has found my rag pile to sleep in so I'm going to use some of the rags and make her a real bed.
It doesn't look hard, and since I have lots of rags, it should be quite a good way to use some up.  What do you think?

Go to this site and get the real instructions!

I'll post my first try and then you can too, in the comments section right below!

Potato Salad - Good for anytime Life on a Shoestring

Potato salad is sold in the salad section of the supermarket, it can cost up to 8.00NIS, so it is cheaper to make it at home.

There are many different ways to make, and this website has lots of variations that won't let you get bored with your potato salad.

It can be used year-round as well as for Passover.
It is best to experiment before Passover so you know that you have a winning recipe for the holiday.

Easy Do IT Yourself Scarf for the Winter! Life on a Shoestring

Have you seen the prices for soft knit scarves lately?  Well, I can't believe it for a machine knit scarf the prices can be very expensive!  So why not make your own?  Yes it takes time, but then you can choose exactly the right color and softness, and you get the fun of actually making it!

I like to make things myself, but they can't be too hard.  My grandmother taught me two knitting stitches, knit and pearl

So this scarf uses only those two stitches, but I change the order to make it interesting.  This scarf is for my daughter!

First you do six knit, then six pearl, six knit and six pearl, until you have the width you want.  then on the reverse side, do knit all the way back.  This scarf has 5 groups of six knit and six pearl.

Every 5 or 6 full rows, then switch and instead of starting with knit, you start with pearl, and keep going with this pattern until you have the length you want, or run out of yarn!

This was last week,

And this is today.  I work fast!

If you want me to knit a scarf like this for you, I knit in my spare time, so it might take two weeks to finish one this size, the cost would be the cost of the yarn, plus 150 NIS, since it is handmade.

E-mail me at rachael5760@yahoo.com if you want to order

Custom Hand Made Bird Cat Toys for sale! Life on a Shoestring

I make custom totally hand sewn cat toys.  Ramona really likes it!

Now let me show you how to make your own!  Bird Toy  You can buy it from me for $5.00 plus shipping or make your own.

First you download the pattern, print it and cut it out.

Second, pin the fabric to the pattern pieces that you have cut out, and cut them out too.

There are only two pattern pieces.

Then pin them together right sides together, so the bird is inside out:

Then sew either by hand, (the way I did it, it takes about an hour to make the whole bird if you hand sew it. If you sew it by machine, then it will take you about 5 minutes!
Then, you turn it right side out, and stuff.  Since I like recycling, I used old laundred! socks, then sewed the tail closed.
Ramona, my cat. saw the finished bird and took it from me!  She is having a good old time with it!
So if you want to buy one, contact me, and I will send you pictures of the fabrics that I have available. All the stuffing is recycled, as well as the fabrics!
Price for me to make you one is $5.00 plus shipping, and paypal fees.

Magnetic Guitar Picks! Life on a Shoestring

If you are a guitarist, and use a pick, they sometimes can be very annoying.  You lose them inside the guitar, and on the floor.  Sometimes I put it in my lap, and then when I stand up it is gone.  Well those days are over! This is a very quick fix and although they don't last very long, it is better than not having a pick at all!

First you start out with one of those advertising magnets.  I also got out a pick to use as a pattern.

Then, I cut my first pick with regular scissors. It doesn't matter that the edges are not straight, but try to make the tip straight when you are cutting.

I got 10 picks from that one magnet!  They will also stay on the stand when I don't need it, or when I want to finger pick!  The purple one is my pattern,

Neat Trick!
Now I can have a new pick any time I want!

Sweet Potato chips - Life on a Shoestring

It is very difficult to get people to eat sweet potatoes.  They just have this texture that is difficult for me to eat. But they have lots of vitamins and are healthy.  The problem is to get kids to eat them too! I just found this recipe that I will try to make.  If you have a Passover oven, you can make this for Passover too, as a healthy snack!

Spice rack for the summer - Life on a Shoestring

Now that summer is here, the bugs are too!  Eventhough I live on the 7th floor, I still can find bugs in my apartment.

One of the places that bugs love the best is the spice rack!  And most people don't even think about it. Many times I use a spice and I forget to close it all the way and then the next time, I find a bug.  This happens mostly with Zatar, but a bug could be hiding in the Sweet Basil or the Organo.

So, I have a new method to keep the bugs out.  I threw away all the old spices, especially the ones that don't close at all.  I went and bought big containers of the spices.  so that they will fit in the door of my . . . . Freezer!
Yes, it cost a bit much for each bottle, but now they fit nicely in the freezer door and they don't fall out.  Next time I need a new spice, I will buy the plastic envelope and fill up the bottle.  I keep them in the same order all the time and it is very convient to find and I now know that there are no bugs in my spices.  Not exactly shoestring, but this saves a lot of time to check each spice for bugs.

Give it a try?

The Job Market - Job hunting on a shoestring

I am on a few job searching sites.  If you are |English speaking, sometimes that is an advantage.  If you know computer programming, or technical writing, you can go to IsraEmploy.com.  You can be on their site for free, and get e-mail updates.  But if you want to know the contact details of a particular job, you have to join the site and pay the fee.

For the most part, I feel that the same jobs are listed on Janglo  http://www.janglo.net and there are more jobs outside of HiTech listed there too.  I have gotten good results from Janglo.

I also just open my eyes and look around.  Yes, the jobs that are posted on stores and restaurants may not be the most exciting, but if you are in need of money bad and don't mind to work then this might be good for you.  I saw this yesterday posted at a restaurant:

Translation  "Itmar Cafe  - Looking for a worker for a cafe restaurant.  Hardworking and serious.  Details available here  or by telephone 050-4636450"

When I find more jobs listed I will put them up here too.  I want to help the people of Jerusalem!

Advertise on a Shoestring!

Now is the time that you need to put a big push for your small business.  People are getting ready for the summer and for many industries this means the busy time of year.

Fitness is important as women want to look good in their summer clothes, or even try to fit into last year's summer clothes.

Hair and Beauty is important now that Lag B'Omer is tonight so haircuts will be permitted again, There will be lots of weddings now until mid-summer So lots of Hair and Beauty treatments will be needed such as Facials.

School will be out soon, so kids will have time to make a big push for private tutoring.  If you teach any computer related topic, if you teach teenagers, then this is the time to advertise!

But where to put your signs?  In the past people put them at bus stops in the neighborhoods, it was easy, people looked at it and there was results.  But be careful now because the Jerusalem Muncipality is now inspecting all the bus stops and writing down and taking down the signs. They will call the phone numbers on the signs, make an appointment and present the business or private person with a ticket of at least 360NIS for each sign they find.  I know because a friend of mine, got 10 of these calls and had to pay 3600NIS!

Here is proof!
Jerusalem Muncipality worker taking down the signs on the bus stop, and writing tickets for each one.  They put the signs in a notebook very nicely and present them to the business owner.
Here is a bulleting board, not far away from the bus stop and as you can see there are signs.  These will not get tickets!
Conclusion: Put your advertising on these bulletin boards, or on the bulletin boards in the lobbies of apartment buildings.  There you cannot get tickets. Of course you don't know how long they will stay up, but I have gotten results in the past.

Good luck!

Higher Education for free? Life on a Shoestring

Do you want an education, but don't care about the piece of paper called a Diploma?   It is true that college graduates on the whole earn more money than high school graduates,  It is very expensive to go to university right now in the United States. Living here in Israel, I'm not so apprehensive, but for me, as much as I'd like a Master's Degree, or an MBA, I can't take the time out to go to university and put my life and kids on hold for the two or three years that it would take. Pick a program and treat it like a real class. log on or go on line at the same time every day, check your progress, do homework if the class requires,  Then you give yourself the education you deserve!

I'm learning a few things right now.  One subject is French.   http://alison.com/courses/Basic-French-Language-For-Everyday-Life  This couse is a video course that has the text in French on the page as well as English.  I find that it helps me to read both languages and hear the French.  I'm not finished yet, but slowly getting there.   You need to register, using either your Google, Yahoo or Facebook, if you want the diploma for each of your courses, you have to pay for them, but it is not necessary.

The Open University offers extracts from their courses,  This is an introductory course about management,
The advantage about these courses is that you don't have to register, just click on the course you want and start to read.   It is useful to take notes while taking this course, it will help you remember what you learned.  Then try to apply the principles in your everyday life.

Don't Throw away that old T-Shirt! Life on a Shoestring

If you have some size 10-14 size T-shirts that are not being worn, but are not too holey, I have some interesting ways that they can be recycled.

Number 1 Use them as a pillow case:

They should fit a bit snug otherwise they fall off during the night. The pillow feel soft and cuddly.  It gives a new look and feel to the pillow!

This second use is good for this time of year when everyone is cleaning.  I want to buy new chairs, but there is not enough time before the holiday for the new chairs to be delivered.  So, now I am using the T-shirts as chair covers!  It is best to use a dark color, and a smaller size so that the shirt is streched a bit.  It doesn't matter if you use a long sleeved shirt, It is comfortable to sit on and easy to take off to wash.

See how the chair cushion looks old and tired, and now with the T-shirt we have a brand new looking chair!  it is comfortable, (I've been sitting on it all day and the material feels soft.  If the shirt fits snug enough, you don't even have to sew it on!

My cat really likes the third use for an old T-shirt.  This used up two items that might have gone into the trash.  First we had a big basket leftover from Purim with the shredded paper in it.  I put it on the floor and kitty came right over and slept in it. But there was one problem,  She kept on chewing on the basket.  So, I put a small size long sleeved T-shirt and now kitty has a nice clean cat bed that I can change the T-shirt to get different colors, and it is washable too!

Passover Preparations, Life on a Shoestring

Passover has got to be one of the most stressful times of the year.  Wait, let me revise that, Getting ready for Passover is one of the most stressful times of the year for me.  We have the tradition in our family to chang over the whole kitchen.  This is after I have already cleaned the rest of the house, I must have thrown out at least 5 giant bags of paper.  I'm changing from a paper giving teacher to digital. you can check out my other blog:http://rachaelenglishclasses.blogspot.co.il/

This is a really time saving trick.  Use Acetone.  Yes, smelly, but really fast and easy to use.  I use old onesies socks, and then throw them away, I use the acetone on everything, counters, cabinets, the stove it works wonders. Get the industrial size, and then during the year fill up small bottles and use as nail polish remover.

Buy the shelf paper early.  The price is still 10NIS like last year, but if you wait until next week, then the price will go up.  Last year I covered the counters with 50 micorn aluminum, Buy it as soon as you see it in the store, it;s cheaper than the 100 micron and doesn't leave as many "paper"cuts.

Now, to make seder more exciting, I found some pillows that the kids can draw themselves, and fill up with your own pillow, or buy the filling.  The draw yourself pillow is : 4.90NIS
and the printed colored pillow is:  6.90  Also available is an Afikomen draw yourself bag is 1.90NIS         All this is available at Hasal 25 Givat Shaul street.
