Ageism is alive and well in Israel

 You might think that because of the emphasis that Judiasm has in honoring the elderly, that the society would be appreciative of the knowledge and experience represented by our older members of the community. 

But this is not the case.  There are many sectors in Israeli society that being older is a hindrance. 

Take apartment hunting for example. 

Recently I saw in the newspapers that landlords in religious neighborhoods don't want to rent their apartments to people who are not religious.  They want to keep their kitchens kosher.  I agree with that. 

But to refuse to rent to an older person is not acceptable.

My mother is 87, she wants to live independantly.  She needs a bit of help, and Bituach Leumi is helping her with 12 hours a week of home help. 

But the building where she is living now is undergoing constuction, and there is lots of noise and dust, and because she has asthma, she can't be around with the dust.  The noise is not so bad, but the pounding of the drills is a big issue. 

So she went to Yissa Bracha, bought the subscription and has been calling the apartment owners. 

One after another have said to her that they won't rent an apartment to someone over 55!  What is this? 

She can afford to pay the rent, she is quiet, she's an artist, and doesn't make noise, she still work at Yad LKashish three times a week, and needs a place to live.  

I would have her come to me, but she as we have 6 people in a 4 room apartment, we are quite full. 

So what is a person to do????? 

Ageism is alive and well in Jerusalem.

אפשר לחשוב שבגלל הדגש שיש ליהדות בהוקרה לקשישים, החברה תעריך את הידע והניסיון המיוצגים על ידי חברי הקהילה המבוגרים שלנו.

אבל זה לא המקרה. יש הרבה מגזרים בחברה הישראלית שגיל מבוגר מהווה מכשול.

קחו למשל ציד דירות.

לאחרונה ראיתי בעיתונים שבעלי דירות בשכונות דתיות לא רוצים להשכיר את הדירות שלהם לאנשים שאינם דתיים. הם רוצים לשמור על כשרות המטבחים שלהם. אני מסכים עם זה.

אבל לסרב להשכיר לאדם מבוגר זה לא מקובל.

אמא שלי בת 87, היא רוצה לחיות באופן עצמאי. היא צריכה קצת עזרה, וביטוח לאומי עוזרת לה ב-12 שעות שבועיות של עזרה ביתית.

אבל הבניין שבו היא גרה עכשיו עובר בנייה, ויש הרבה רעש ואבק, ובגלל שיש לה אסטמה, היא לא יכולה להיות בסביבה עם האבק. הרעש לא כל כך נורא, אבל החבטות של המקדחות הן בעיה גדולה.

אז היא הלכה לייסה ברכה, קנתה את המנוי והתקשרה לבעלי הדירות.

אחד אחרי השני אמרו לה שהם לא ישכירו דירה למישהו מעל גיל 55! מה זה?

היא יכולה להרשות לעצמה לשלם את שכר הדירה, היא שקטה, היא אמנית, ולא עושה רעש, היא עדיין עובדת ביד לקשיש שלוש פעמים בשבוע, וצריכה מקום לגור.

הייתי רוצה שהיא תבוא אליי, אבל היא כמו שיש לנו 6 אנשים בדירת 4 חדרים, אנחנו די מלאים.

אז מה אדם צריך לעשות?????
