Demographics make a big difference for selling in Jerusalem

Jerusalem is a special market.  The city has a very diverse population of all religions.  When you are choosing what merchandise to sell, you have to take into account your local population.

If you are in the Center of Jerusalem, the clothing offered should be different than in other places in the city.

For example, lets take boys jeans and pants.  There are three children clothing stores in Givat Shaul, Har Nof area.

When you walk into All in One, they sell only boys pants, and girls skirts.  They don't have a wide selection, but usually if the child is not too picky, you can find something.  But my son is picky.

Next door, there is Tamnoon. This is a more fashion store, and caters to a more liberal crowd, and they get customers that are more traditional, as well as others.  One big problem with this store, is that they didn't research the area, and they stock lots of girls pants.  Well, in this area, girls wear skirts, not pants! The boys pants sell out right away, and let me tell you, my son wouldn't be caught dead wearing girls pants.  They are cut differently, and have flashy accents.  So, even if the girls pants are on sale, they sit there.  If they would have brought in boys pants instead, they would make a lot more money.  I called the company, and tried to order two size 12's but they have sold out in the whole country!  No boys pants!  When I was a merchandising manager at JCPenney, with the boys department, I would have been really in trouble if I didn't have boys jeans in all the sizes in stock!  This is not a seasonal item, like coats, that you stock only in the winter.

Fox, is across the street. They are trying to be trendy.  Well, the boys in this neighborhood don't want trendy.  The trend is to show a bit of elastic that looks like underwear that sticks up out of the pants.  Weird.   They are also skimping on the sizes.  The size 12 is more like a size 10, and well my son won't wear size 14!

So, when you are deciding what merchandise to buy, you have to take into account your area, the culture and make sure that you don't run out of basic items.
