Shoestring businesses

It has been said that if you want to start a business that you have to have a lot of money.

This can be true in some cases, but it is not that necessary.  Even if you are a university, Seminary, or Yeshiva student you can start your own business.

First you have to have a goal.  What do you like to do?
You could start you own tutoring business.  Teach what you like and know the best.

Then, figure out where your skill is most needed.  Do people in your area care about your subject?  If you love to arrange flowers, but there is no market for it then find something else.

Ok, you have your skill that you would like to market.

First, test the waters to see if there really is demand. In Jerusalem, it is forbidden to post signs outside on bus stops and telephone poles.  The best place to promote is inside the apartment buildings.  People really look at these signs and they call.

So design a flyer in Microsoft word, or Publisher with a cute picture.  Start off making 50 copies and put them up.  It might take an hour or two but this is time well spent.  Make sure that you put a phone number on your sign. Putting a website is less important in a flyer.

Good luck in your first business venture!
