Pesach 5771 / Passover 2011
Fact: Israel's economy is one of the strongest in the world today.
Fact: Israel's poverty rate is amongst the highest in the Western world!
A Pesach Story that is Very Relevant to this Day:
Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik of Brisk was
known as not only a very wise man, but
also as a very sympathetic and generous
man. One day before Pesach, a man came
to his house to ask a question. He asked
the rabbi if a person could fulfill
the obligation of drinking the four glasses
at the Seder with milk. The rabbi
asked the man if he was ill. The man told
him that he was healthy but wine was
too expensive this year for him to afford.
The rabbi took out 25 rubles and the
man was proud and didn't want to accept it.
"I didn't come for charity. I came
to ask a question." The rabbi told him to
consider it a loan, only to be paid
back when G-d helps him.
After the man left, the rebbetzin (rabbi's wife
) asked why he gave the man 25
rubles when 2 or 3 rubles would be enough
for wine. The rabbi said, "If he ate
meat then he wouldn't be able to drink
the milk, therefore he didn't have enough
money for meat, all that is necessary for Pesach."
In Israel today, for a myriad of reasons,
there are many Jewish families who are
not following the strong Israeli economic
trend. They are poor.
In some past years, we prepared Passover
packages exclusively for Sderot; in the
Intifada years, we did many holiday
packages for the Shomron, and so on. This
year, we are setting up a packing facility
near our office in the Lower Galilee
and we will deliver to needy families
from our list in Tiberias, the Shomron,
and Sderot as well.
In tribute to the way of the saintly
Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik of Brisk, we
will not give them only wine and matzo.
We will give them with kavod or honor.
Every family receiving a Passover food
package from B'Ahavat Yisrael will be
getting enough of the essentials including
fish and meat as not to have to ask
the milk instead of wine question.
Please donate one or more of the packages
