New Building in Jerusalem.

This is the central construction site in Jerusalem.  It used to be an old village that was used by the Government. I once had to go there when I was working for Prof. Moshe Prywes, running his Israel Journal of Medical Sciences.  I had to get approval of the non-profit status of the magazine.

Now, it going to be a very expensive high quality residential complex. I'll go back and take more pictures as the construction progresses and I see the gate open!

New Idea in Dancing! Monday nights in the center of town!

I heard this from a client this week.  There is a way to combat noise pollution.  You know, the loud music that is played at dance halls.  Then there is the problem that when you are dancing, and then you want to talk, or that someone can't handle loud music but loves to dance because of some physical problem?

So Avraham Hostel has a novel idea!  They pass out bluetooth headsets to all the dancers, and they put them on, adjust the volume to what they want, and dance away.  This helps with the noise pollution in the neighborhood, the police are not called, and everyone is happy.

Here is the website for more details!

I'm not sure if it Kosher, but you can just go for the dancing and drinks.

Have fun!

In the Middle of Jerusalem is the Swedish Monastery!

Jerusalem is huddled around the Swedish Monastery.   In this rare picture, you can see the flag waving!
It sits in the "Green Lung" in the middle of the city, and Katamon, is named for it.  "Kata" mean near to and "mon" is short for Monastery.  I have never been inside but that might change in the near future.

Good News from Jerusalem

Good News from Jerusalem!

What usually sells newspapers?  What do people really need to hear?  These can be two diametrically opposing needs.  Newspapers and now news websites and apps usually tell us about world disasters, hurricanes, typhoons, financial downturns and the such.

But, what do people really need to hear? Good News.  Yes.  Sometimes good news can be hard to find.
I have some for you today.

The first concerns the case of the missing wallet.  I have a colleague who lost her wallet on the way to Ulpan, where you go to learn Hebrew.  She went to class, and when she came out, the wallet was not there.  It was a hot day and she  had put the wallet on its strap on her belt like many others do.  It fell off and was lost.

So, what did she do?  She called the Police, and lo and behold, someone had turned it in!  Not only did she get the wallet back, but all the credit cards, and ID as well.  The Police even went so far as to deliver it to her home!  How is that for Good News!!

The other Good News is that today is the 9th of the 9th of the 9th! This day comes once in fifty years, and during a specific time frame on this day you can pray for Health, Prosperity, Wealth etc.

Here is a  link to find out more about it. http://www.kupat.org/news/?story=147

I am not a Rabbi, but I have composed my own prayer that I will say during these precious 9 minutes.  You are welcome to use this prayer, or compose your own.

Blessed are you King of the Universe, Please grant me and my family, friends, colleagues, and clients every blessing for good and prosperity.  Grant long life and abundance, happiness and wealth to every person on this planet for the highest good.  Grant that there is harmony between parents and children, in every generation from now until the times of Mashiach, may he come speedily in our days.  Make us worthy of your Blessings and show us the way to bring Your Light into the world, to do our part in making this world a better place.  Amen.

Motzi Shabbat Musings about Parshat Toldot

We never really stop studying the Torah,  even though this Shabbat we read Toldot, and at Mincha we started the next Parsha Vayetzi, I am still pondering Toldot.

Why is it that everyone is so concerned about Yitzchak Avinu giving a blessing?  In the modern world, we say blessings every day.  We say the same blessings every day in fact.  Jewish prayer is all about repeating the same bracha over and over again!

Why can't have Yitzchak Avinu say the same blessing and have it count for both of his sons?  Hashem doesn't have enough resources to provide for both Yakoov Avinu and Esav?

And Yitzchak knows that he made a mistake.  Even when he said " The voice is of Yakov but it is the feeling of Esav  He goes with his feeling.  and he makes the mistake.  He should have listened.  Yes, the voice and the intonation and style was Yakov all the way.  People can disguise themselves, but their essence remains the same.  Yitzchak blesses.  And what a blessing!  The dew of the earth, those who bless you will be bless and those who curse you will be cursed.  Your brother will serve you.

Then Esav comes in with the food that he has hunted, and cooked.  He bruskly demands the blessing and then Yitzchak knows who he has blessed.  Yakov will be the one who has the Heavenly approval.  He shall remain blessed.  But what is Exav to do?  He cries, "Isn't there a blessing for me?  In spite of his base character, he also has a streak of wanting to be close to HaShem.  He wants to feel Divine favor.  But his blessing as he finally gets it from Yitzchak is not the same. and in that sense it is inferior.  He vows revenge upon his brother.  It looks like it will end like the first set of brothers, Kayin and Hevel.

Rivka sees this and ushers Yakov out before Esav can do anything, for Rivka still cares for both her children.

Yitzchak was not stupid however, before Yakov left, he gave him the Blessing of Avraham.  This was the blessing of continuation of the Jewish People, the spiritual world.  This was the blessing that was really the important one, and the first blessings were meant to speak about the material world, and Avraham's blessing was for the spiritual world.

What does this mean the two different blessings?  Humans are the only creatures on this Earth who can speak. Chimpanzees can be taught the use of words, a vocabulary, but they don't use language as Humans do in their natural habitat.  Dolphins can be taught to do tricks and respond to human speech just as dogs.  But we humans use speech to convey meaning and we have the power in our speech to heal or to hurt.  When we speak we have a God-like power that no other has. We have to use it to help.

Esav used his power to cause injury and hunt, he had a glib mouth and could squeeze information out of anyone.

Yakov used his power of speech to learn Torah and to raise a fully God-fearing family  All of Yakov sons followed the way of peace and were faithful to HaShem.

May we all use our power of speech to gather HaShem's light and further his purpose in this world.
Shavua Tov,

The light at the end of the Tunnel

This is of a building in Arnona, and it reminded me of the light at the end of the Tunnel. Remember that if you are a little down, that HaShem doesn't give you tests that you can't pass.  Sure, there are times that it seems that everything is insurmountable, and that it is impossible to go on.  Look at this picture and feel the hope.  Feel the light that is coming from the end, and you will find the strength to go on.  You have accomplished much in your life and will accomplish more.  Choose to see light and not darkness.

Local Businesses you should know about: Weizman Bakery

This is a small bakery in Givat Shaul, tucked behind Givat Shaul Street, you can find it by the smell alone.  As you see, the breads are  kneaded by hand, and baked with love.  We have been buying our Challot there for about 3 years, I usually go early in the morning while they are still hot.  They stay fresh until Monday morning!  Many yeshivot also buy from this bakery.  The prices are pretty good, a Sweet big Challa is 6.5NIS, the rolls are 10NIS for 10 rolls, the ruglach are a bit more expensive.  This morning I spent 42.60 but that was because I also bought a Zero Coke to drink on the way home.

Go and find this bakery, you'll have the best Challot to brighten your table!
Shabbat Shalom,
