Don't Throw away that old T-Shirt! Life on a Shoestring

If you have some size 10-14 size T-shirts that are not being worn, but are not too holey, I have some interesting ways that they can be recycled.

Number 1 Use them as a pillow case:

They should fit a bit snug otherwise they fall off during the night. The pillow feel soft and cuddly.  It gives a new look and feel to the pillow!

This second use is good for this time of year when everyone is cleaning.  I want to buy new chairs, but there is not enough time before the holiday for the new chairs to be delivered.  So, now I am using the T-shirts as chair covers!  It is best to use a dark color, and a smaller size so that the shirt is streched a bit.  It doesn't matter if you use a long sleeved shirt, It is comfortable to sit on and easy to take off to wash.

See how the chair cushion looks old and tired, and now with the T-shirt we have a brand new looking chair!  it is comfortable, (I've been sitting on it all day and the material feels soft.  If the shirt fits snug enough, you don't even have to sew it on!

My cat really likes the third use for an old T-shirt.  This used up two items that might have gone into the trash.  First we had a big basket leftover from Purim with the shredded paper in it.  I put it on the floor and kitty came right over and slept in it. But there was one problem,  She kept on chewing on the basket.  So, I put a small size long sleeved T-shirt and now kitty has a nice clean cat bed that I can change the T-shirt to get different colors, and it is washable too!

Happy Passover!

First of all, May all of you have a HAPPY FULFILLING HOLIDAY OF PASSOVER. The cleaning is so that we can get away from all the things that are getting in our way, and purfying ourselves for freedom.

Passover to me is a family holiday, The cooking for the Seder, the telling of the Hagadda, Drinking four cups or five cups of wine (grape juice for me please)  and singing the Passover songs around the table.  I hope that you have fond memories of Passover and will have a great time this year as well at your Seder.
This last week before Passover, I will be available on call.  I'm cleaning my house as well, and you won't believe how much I found to throw out!  (I'm a pack rat so it is difficult to throw things away!)

You can make your next appointment for Hair Cuts, according to your personal minhag.

The Traveling Hair Salon also does hospital visits to Shaare Zedek, Sarah Herzog and Bikur Holim hospitals.

After Passover, I will also be offering High Lights and Low Lights for you.  I have a portable sink that I can bring to your home, so the dye and washing out process will be more like a salon experience.

Passover Preparations, Life on a Shoestring

Passover has got to be one of the most stressful times of the year.  Wait, let me revise that, Getting ready for Passover is one of the most stressful times of the year for me.  We have the tradition in our family to chang over the whole kitchen.  This is after I have already cleaned the rest of the house, I must have thrown out at least 5 giant bags of paper.  I'm changing from a paper giving teacher to digital. you can check out my other blog:http://rachaelenglishclasses.blogspot.co.il/

This is a really time saving trick.  Use Acetone.  Yes, smelly, but really fast and easy to use.  I use old onesies socks, and then throw them away, I use the acetone on everything, counters, cabinets, the stove it works wonders. Get the industrial size, and then during the year fill up small bottles and use as nail polish remover.

Buy the shelf paper early.  The price is still 10NIS like last year, but if you wait until next week, then the price will go up.  Last year I covered the counters with 50 micorn aluminum, Buy it as soon as you see it in the store, it;s cheaper than the 100 micron and doesn't leave as many "paper"cuts.

Now, to make seder more exciting, I found some pillows that the kids can draw themselves, and fill up with your own pillow, or buy the filling.  The draw yourself pillow is : 4.90NIS
and the printed colored pillow is:  6.90  Also available is an Afikomen draw yourself bag is 1.90NIS         All this is available at Hasal 25 Givat Shaul street.

Comparing Pet Stores in Jerusalem Comparison Shopping

If you have a pet, now is the time that you have to think about how to feed it during Passover. There are a few options.  One is to feed the pet human food, but what do you do after Passover when your dog or cat doesn't want to go back to eating pet food?  Fish food can be a problem because most of it has a lot of Chumtz.

I went to three pet shops and they do have Kosher for Passover pet food.  The first one is Jungle.  http://www.jungle-club.co.il/  They are located in the Center of Jerusalem, Their prices are a bit higher but the do have good customer service in the store.  They do deliver the same day if the order is over 200NIS.  But you have to give precise instructions about how to find your house,  They call when they are bringing your order,

The second pet shop is located in Beit HaKerem, it is a smaller shop than the one in the center of town, http://www.t.co.il/Business/Card-411277.html The staff are very nice, they also offer free delivery if the order is over 200NIS.  They add in a small cat toy if you have a cat to the order.  That is cute.  The prices are a bit lower, and they also take telephone orders and same day delivery. No problem finding the house, they will leave the products outside your door if you are not home.   200NIS minimum buy for free delivery.
The third place is a warehouse www.tenlahayot.co.il I got the brochure in the mail and I have been carrying it inside my purse for a long time so it is a bit dog eared. I ordered from them just this week, They have a sale, that the first buy, you get 18% off, the second and third 5% off and the fourth buy 18% off.  The prices are lower, They have free delivery I just ordered one item for  114 NIS and they brought it to the door.  They called a half hour before delivery.  They don't have all the brands, but the ones they have are good.    I haven't opened the Kosher for Passover cat food yet, Ramona still has to finish her Chumutz food!

Happy Getting Ready for Passover with your pet!

The Israeli Elections are today, the Polls are open!

Want your picture taken?

The democratic right to vote is alive and well in Israel.  We have on the average two or three years. Today is the day we get to decide.  The Right and the Left have different agendas.  The Left has chosen to concentrate on economic issues
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/israel-election-why-the-cost-of-food-and-lack-of-affordable-housing-are-a-bigger-threat-to-benjamin-netanyahu-hopes-than-iran-10104864.html  But this has not deterred the right to keep the security situation in focus. http://www.vox.com/2015/3/13/8205285/israeli-election-march-17

No matter how you decide to vote, make sure that you go to the polls and make your voice heard.

No Thanks,
There might be a line in your polling place, so bring something to read, or a fellow voter to talk to.  There is lots of security today, Police are on alert and are in the polling places to prevent any distrubances.  If you have your election notification, then it is a bit easier, but I lost mine, and I voted anyway.  Go Vote!

We really had a view, but now there is a building in the way.

This was the view to the East that we had as we moved into the building.
If you look very carefully, you will see on the right hand side of the picture Migdal Ha'ir, which is at the top of Ben Yehuda Street.
This is looking a bit to the North, and sometimes you can see Hebrew University on a clear day.
This is what the Lifta Valley looked like as they were building Route 9.

Now, the Eastern view is gone, and Lifta Valley is filled with cars. . . .
