How to be a good manager

I learned how to be a good manager when I was working at the Cooperage while I was studying at UCLA. I was the afternoon shift manager of the bussing staff. I had the responsibility of keeping the restaurant clean and tidy. As soon as a customer left a table, a bus person had to go and clean it, throwing away the garbage, wiping down the table, picking up trash on the floor.

There were some jobs that were really yucky. As a hands on manager, however I would never give someone else to do a job that I wouldn't do myself. The really yucky job was to wash out the big trash container. It had to be taken down stairs on the freight elevator, trash emptied out and then washed out with a hose. My employees didn't like to do this job. They would wait until the trash was over flowing and it would start to mess up the hallway. So I called one employee over and asked why she didn't take down the trash? She said that it was too smelly. So I told her, ok, let's do it together. We took the trash down, emptied it into the big trash compactor, and we washed it out.

Word got around that I would do the dirty jobs too. I never had trouble again to get the restaurant clean.

Managers should work alongside their employees. This shows that the manager cares, about the job and about the employees.

Don't forget to say the Omer!

How to be a good passenger in the car

Important life skills to teach your children.

One life skill that everybody needs to learn is how to be a good passenger while someone else is driving in the car.

Most kids nowadays get to school via a bus or a minibus that in Israel is called a "Tender."
So they don't really learn this important skill.

If you are a passenger, you have to realize that your life and the life of everyone in the car is in the hands of the driver. You should not make comments or yell at the driver, attempt to honk the horn for the driver or in anyway bother the driver of the car.

If the driver makes a mistake while driving, everyone including the driver could pay with their lives. It is not safe. If you trust the driver, then you have to sit quietly in your seat with the seat belt fastened.

Car safety is very important.

Self Talk is very important

How people speak to their friends, is usually very polite. We say please and thank you, we are nice on the phone. With family especially close family, communication often degenerates and we are not so polite.

Many studies have found that many marriages start the slippery slope to divorce because of little things. What are some of the problems? Many are avoidable. For example, one person squeezes the toothpaste one way, from the bottom, and the other from the top. How to solve this problem, buy two tubes of toothpaste!

When you are speaking to your spouse, and on a day like today which is a fast day, be extra careful and be polite.

Now, we get to my real point here. If we have to be very careful of how we speak to our friends and family, how about how we speak to ourselves? My stepmother in Philadelphia told me this story this week. You know that in Philly it is very cold. She had to go out early in the morning to go to work, and instead of taking the keys, you know the ones which have all the keys to the house and the car, she took by mistake a different key chain. She didn't notice until she got on the other side of the front door, which closes automatically, locking itself.
She was outside at 7:30 am, no keys to the house, no keys to the car. She did have her purse and the cellphone! Thank goodness for that. While she was outside, she could have chosen to speak to herself in two ways, one positively or negatively. Which is the one that we most usually choose? Yup, you guessed it, the negative way. In the end, she called a locksmith and lots of money later, was able to get into her house, and get the car keys and off to work.

Does speaking negatively to ourselves, putting ourselves down really help the situation? It is like trying to write an important report for work when there is heavy construction taking place in your building the floor below yours. The noise can be so loud that you really don't think and can't find the solution to your problem.

If you can't find your car keys and you are looking for them, which is a better self-talk?
"Oh, I never find my keys! I'm so stupid for losing them, all the time!" Or " I put my keys in a really good place, now where would that be? "

I opt for the second. It is more helpful and leads me on the path to find the keys.

San Diego is the place to buy in the United States!

San Diego is the place to be in Southern California. This could be a first step, if you are planning to move, in the United States. It is a vibrant city that reminds me of Jerusalem, nestled on its hilltops.

The first place to visit on the net is here http://www.jewishinsd.com/
Here you can find out about all the Jewish services synagogues, kosher restaurants, and cultural events.

Then, if you are moving to a new city, you need to take a Real Estate agent. SanDiegoHomeBuys.com

What not to say during a Job Interview!

Do you have a Job Interview coming up after the Holiday? Here are some tips that you need to know:
What Not to Say During a Job Interview:

Don’t say: “My current boss is horrendous.”
Why: It’s unprofessional. Your interviewer might wonder when you’d start bad-mouthing her. For all you know, she and your current boss are old pals.
Instead say: “I’m ready for a new challenge” or a similarly positive remark.

Don’t say: “Do you think I’d fit in here?”

Why: You’re the interviewee, not the interviewer.
Instead say: “What do you enjoy about working here?” By all means ask questions, but prepare ones that demonstrate your genuine interest in the company.

Don’t say: “What are the hours like?” or “What’s the vacation policy?”

Why: You want to be seen as someone who focuses on getting the job done.
Instead say: “What’s the day-to-day like here?” Then, if you’ve really jumped through every hoop and time off still hasn’t been mentioned, say, “Can you tell me about the compensation and benefits package?”

Halachot of Hair Cutting at Pesach and beyond

Most people know the basic Halachot of getting your hair cut around the Passover season.
1. You can get your hair cut before Passover
2. Most people wait then from the Holiday until Lag B'Omer.
3. There are some who start the restrictions of not cutting the hair from Rosh Chodesh Iyar and then wait again after Shavout.
4. You can get a Facial, there are no restrictions about taking care of your skin.
5. You can also get your wig washed and set during the Omer restricitons time, as this is not your own hair, and it is considered, as clothing.
6. If a woman who covers all her hair, has some sticking out and needs it to be cut, she can get the part that sticks out cut so as to be modest again.
Kosher for Pesach Kitchen! Yeah!!

The interesting thing about these customs, is that you can change them from year to year, based on your needs.

Please note that this is just a guide, and to really be sure, you should ask your Rabbi for more guidance.

Which ever your Minhag (custom) this year, The Traveling Hair Salon will come to you in Jerusalem

A needed Facial Break!

Yes, it is not such a pretty picture now, but after my Facial, I will look and feel so much better!
I had not been out of the house for two days! This is the "spot check" facial for acne, I also have an "anti-aging" and natural facials with baking soda.

I am now scheduling Facials for after Pesach, if you are too busy now. (Yeah, I thought so)
But remember to take your beauty break, clean your hands from that "bleach" smell and be calm for Seder Night.

Coloring your hair?

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

I decided to use my time wisely this week. As I was cleaning the kitchen cabinets, I also colored my hair. Well, as you know, Pesach cleaning is the time to deep clean and throw out things that you don't need.

I did that. My daughters did that! They cleaned their room without my even nagging!
But I threw out something very important. I threw out the box that told me what hair color I was using!

Yes, I thought that I was coloring my hair with a light brown, but when I finally looked up after the 40 minutes was over, I found that I now have black hair! I have never had black hair, but now I do!

The color is a very nice black, rich, and soft to the touch. Garnier hair color is a very nice color and easy to use. Just make sure that you know what you are putting on!

This is an affiliate link, so if you order I get a very small commission, just so you know.

Happy Pesach cleaning!

Traveling In and Out of Jerusalem...Better Read Dr Tova's Pain Free Tips

Traveling In and Out of Jerusalem...Better Read Dr Tova's Pain Free Tips...

Whether it is in Jerusalem or to another city in Israel or another country, many people love to travel. But then the unexpected happens: an attack in your lower back or neck while on the plane, when you first arrive at your destination or when your on your way to start relaxing.

My job as a doctor of Chiropractic and Rehabilitation is to make sure my patients get where they want to go feeling healthy and strong, avoid any unforeseen injuries or mishaps and return home in the same condition in which they left.

Sometimes travels present unforeseen changes and unpredictable physical and mental challenges.

Did Dorothy expect the Yellow Brick Road?
Did Little Red Riding Hood expect the Big Bad Wolf?
Both young travelers could have used a GPS, for sure.

The tips in this article are to ensure travelers get to where they want to go feeling healthy and strong.... and return home in the same condition.

Here are some common sense tips and tools for traveling in comfort and staying pain free :
1.Pack a small, firm pillow for your neck and/or lower back to create the correct position and proper comfort so your body will be able to sit in an airplane seat that was built for jolly green giants with curve less spines.
2.Drink water, and plenty of it, to stay hydrated in a very dry environment. Flying on the plane is an opportunity to relax and have an alcoholic beverage. Go ahead, but be sure to drink twice as much water as alcohol.
3.Take a walk or a stretch break every hour to keep the blood circulating and oxygen flowing.. This is very important for all your muscles, especially those in your legs and feet.
4.Wear comfortable shoes. Leave your pumps and skyscrapers at home; flats are the best choice. They come off and on easily so you you can easily stretch your ankles, feet and toes.
5.Going through check-in and security can be very exhausting that is why it’s so important to dress for comfort as well as style. The looser the better – tight, stiff clothes can make you feel really uncomfortable. Opt for clothes that give you enough space to stretch and relax.
6.Due to climate differences and unpredictable changes, wear layers; you can always add or remove a layer to make yourself more comfortable. The worst thing is to be encumbered by too much material on your body, not to mention the small spaces in the seats, aisles and bathroom.
Before you get on the plane:
1. Pack some reusable heat patches or a small ice pack. Use ice for any acute pain and heat for any soreness/tightness
2. Bring a cervical pillow – either the inflatable kind or a bean bag. If you don’t have one of these, consider rolling up a small towel for your neck and/or lower back.
3. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids. This is essential before, during and after the flight.
4. Lift your luggage in three stages. It is recommended to break the action of lifting a heavy item down into smaller parts. When lifting a bag into an overhead bin, it can first be lifted to the top of the seat and then into the overhead in a separate motion. Bend at the knees and use leg muscles rather than back muscles to lift. Avoid twisting the lower back while lifting; instead, pivot with the feet. Carry heavy items as close to the body as possible, distributing weight evenly on both sides of the body
5. When carrying a shoulder bag, switch sides often to avoid stressing one side of the back
On the plane:
1. Take many stretch breaks... and then some. Change positions often in your seat. To keep the blood flowing, you can draw the alphabet in the air with your feet and hands
2. Exercise your calf and leg muscles to increase the circulation of blood and oxygen in your legs. Every 20-30 minutes, bend your knees and then straighten your legs, then press your feet hard into the floor or against the foot rest.
3. Stretch your neck in all ranges of motion: forward, back, side to side, ear to shoulder. Do this slowly and deliberately.
4. Write the alphabet in the air with your wrists, hands and fingers and your ankles, feet and toes.
5. Stand up and stretch many times during the flight, preferably once an hour.
6. Raise your arms up high, in front of you and then back, moving your shoulder joints.
7. Find many reasons to get up and walk around the plane
At your destination:
1. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The biggest complaint I hear from travelers is sore feet. Soak them in a hot bath or ask the hotel for some Dead Sea salt. Comfortable shoes for walking on all kinds of different terrain are an absolute must.
2. Make sure the bed and pillow you are sleeping on are comfortable for your neck and back. Ask the hotel manager and don’t be shy to ask for a board or a mattress pad to make your body feel more comfortable
3. If necessary, ask the hotel concierge for the name of a local chiropractor to get a treatment so you can get on with your vacation or business trip – pain free.

Blessing on the Trees The Month of Nissan

This is the tree in Givat Shaul where the nice people who live at Kehati 5 planted the cherry tree many years ago. They put up the proper blessing for passersby to fulfill the commandment to bless the trees of Israel every year in the month of Nissan. As you can see there are flowers on the tree, making this a proper tree to bless at this time. I stopped by yesterday and blessed. I have done so every year since I came to Israel. May you be blessed as you bless the land!

An Alternative to coloring your hair

When you get mature, some women's hair begins to turn color to grey or white.
There are many products on the market now that will help with this problem. Some women don't call it a problem, but others do.

One product Super Youth Hair is good for touch-ups. You put it on when you first see the hair changing color and it supplies the Melanin, that hair lacks, and the natural color returns. As you can see, the cream is yellow, but the hair "knows" what color to go back to.

I suggest to use this between colorings.

One caveat though, it contains Lead Acetate, so don't use if you are sensitive to this chemical.
You can order it through Amazon, as the company itself does not ship to Israel.
Here is a link: Youth Hair on Amazon

Have a great day!
