Shoestring businesses

It has been said that if you want to start a business that you have to have a lot of money.

This can be true in some cases, but it is not that necessary.  Even if you are a university, Seminary, or Yeshiva student you can start your own business.

First you have to have a goal.  What do you like to do?
You could start you own tutoring business.  Teach what you like and know the best.

Then, figure out where your skill is most needed.  Do people in your area care about your subject?  If you love to arrange flowers, but there is no market for it then find something else.

Ok, you have your skill that you would like to market.

First, test the waters to see if there really is demand. In Jerusalem, it is forbidden to post signs outside on bus stops and telephone poles.  The best place to promote is inside the apartment buildings.  People really look at these signs and they call.

So design a flyer in Microsoft word, or Publisher with a cute picture.  Start off making 50 copies and put them up.  It might take an hour or two but this is time well spent.  Make sure that you put a phone number on your sign. Putting a website is less important in a flyer.

Good luck in your first business venture!

Never Give UP!

Even when it looks as if your last leaf is falling off, if you have the resources, a bit of water, a bit of sun everyday, you can grow that new branch.  It might take time but you can do it.   I was planning to have an orchard of Etrog seedlings (Rav Machpud), and 50 had sprouted, but only these three have the inner resources to make it.  Each leaf is a struggle for life.  Each day can bring a hungry bird, or too much heat.  So you need luck.  You need to take slow and steady action each day.

These are the brave three that have made it to this day.  Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Maybe in another 4 years we will see the fruits from these trees!

Dvar Torah Parshat Bamidbar

The names of the Sedra of the week are taken from the first significant word that appears in the first verses.  So, the word Bamidbar is different from all other sedras of the Torah, and so it appears as the name of the Parsha, and since it is the first parsha of the new book, it is the name of the book.  Bamidbar means in the desert.  Why is this significant? The people of Israel have already been in the desert of Sinai for two years!  What have they been doing?  They received the Ten Commandments, and Moshe was teaching the people the Torah.  What is going on here?

The first time that Hashem spoke to Moshe in this parsha, he uses the word "וידבר "   And he spoke, this is actually the very first word of the Parsha. Moshe is to count all the Israelites.  Didn't they get counted before? Why is this census so important?

Later in verse 19, יט  Hashem commands Moshe with the word ,"צווה" to count the people of Israel.
Why is Moshe commanded to do the very thing that he was told before?

This parsha takes place after the incident of the Calf, the death of Aaron's sons.  Hashem wanted to count the people of Israel to show them that he still had confidence in them, and that they were able to still be close to Hashem.

The word ,"צווה" in verse 19 still causes some confusion however.  In a family, when something needs to be done, the parents ask the children nicely.  But then for some reason, the task still didn't get done. So the second time, the request is formulated in a stronger tone. In the same way this is what is happening in this parsha.  Moshe has already started the count, and the command, ,"צווה" was to help him continue to do it.

Many times in the Torah, Moshe is commanded to do something.  It is taken as self evident that Moshe will do what he is asked.  Following directions is supposed to be easy. But as we can see from our own lives, it is very difficult.

Most people don't like to follow directions. Just go into any classroom.  Teachers have to coax the students to do their homework.  Who does the homework benefit?  Does the teacher benefit from the homework?  No, it takes lots of time for the teacher to check it.  It would be much less time consuming for the teacher, not to assign homework. The students benefit from doing homework by seeing and grappling with the material learned in class a second time.  This is borne out by experiments.  But do the students really understand that it is for their benefit?  Not really.  It is like pulling teeth to get them to do homework.

Moshe Rabbenu was the prime example of a person who did what was expected of him.  Let us all follow in his footsteps.

Are we better off with the Light Rail Train?

This is a picture of the downtown area of Jerusalem.  Kinda empty.  Where did the people go? There are people about, but are they really revitalizing the downtown?  Do people really go there to do shopping, or do they go to the Malcha Mall?

Where do people who like to spend money go?  I really didn't see what was the problem with letting busses and cars go on Yaffa street.  The business were hopping, and you could get a seat on almost any bus to take you to the Central bus station.  Now, the train is usually so crowded that you have to push to get on, and most likely you won't get a seat.  This is difficult if you have done your shopping at Machne Yehuda market.  You have your cart, and there is no place to put it.

The downtown suffered for many year while they were building the light rail system, and many businesses went bankrupt.  We might have a cleaner city, but the quality of life has decreased.  I only go downtown if I really need it.  I save up all the errands to get done at one time, while before, I might have gone downtown a few times a week.  Now it is more like once a month.

Impact for Coaches

Impact for coaches is measured by results.  If you go into a company and you don't produce results, you won't be a a coach there very long.

How do you measure results?  You have to decide.  Do you measure sales, number of calls made, number of call backs, number of interviews?  Each company is different.  There is no overall template for measurement, but most companies measure sales, or net income.  This is an objective measurement and can be compared year to year.

When I was in the retail industry we measured our sales month by month.  It was not perfect because the holidays didn't always fall precisely during the same month each year.  One year the Spring holidays came in April, and then the next year they came in March.  This was difficult to make the comparison and make the proper  budget.

It so happened, that Spring came twice that year.  People bought for the holidays in March and then came back and bought for the summer holidays,  the heat came early that year.

Maybe that is what happening in Israel this year, we had Passover early, and now it is summer!
